  2. The retail landscape is undergoing rapid change. It has always been one of the first industries to be affected by economic fluctuations or political turbulence, but when you add to that the myriad of other factors impacting the sector today—chief among them being technology—traditional retailers and disruptors start speculating about and often fearing the future.

For starters, the retail industry is and will continue to be alive and well for the foreseeable future. A recent study by Deloitte predicted that “consumers will spend confidently throughout 2018.” In fact, the research highlights that the sector is expected to see a growth of 3.2% to 3.8% this year. This projected growth is for the global retail industry, which includes brick-and-mortar and online formats. The competition and the wide range of choices in channels and formats is also expected to continue, according to the study. The customer has always been king—and despite the changes the sector is undergoing, retail has remained and will likely always be the customer’s kingdom.

  3. With the advancements and changing trends in digital technology, digital marketing is expected to take giant strides in the future. We see E-commerce players like Amazon prioritizing marketplace and the search engine giant, Google testing out new approaches such as shopping tab to enhance customer experience and leverage buying intent and giving importance to customer experience and engagement by rolling out algorithm updates. Voice searches and Vernacular Searches are growing at a rapid pace and the trend will witness an exponential growth by 2020.

  4. DIY Surveys aren’t what they used to be. We are in an age where technology can extract insights, patterns and even sentiments from structured and unstructured conversations on multiple platforms; and feed them directly into campaigns. Leela Srinivasan, CMO of SurveyMonkey, brings us up-to-speed on ways that technology is elevating DIY surveys to a science, and what marketers need to do to drive optimal business outcomes from them.

  5. Voice user interface (VUI) development has been opened up to brands, people and developers vying for a share of voice in this new, noisy marketplace by both Amazon and Google who have created free ‘skill’ or ‘action’ building platforms for their market-leading personal voice assistants. Although this accessible technology is exciting, it is still in the early stages of adoption and presents a steep learning curve - for both brands and customers. In this world, everyone’s a beginner.

  6. Technology has been the cornerstone of economic growth around the world for hundreds of years. It has underpinned the last three industrial revolutions and is now the driving factor in today’s Fourth Industrial Revolution — marked by emerging technologies in a variety of fields.

Unsurprisingly, artificial intelligence is one of the key technologies driving this new revolution. As described in the 1950s by the father of modern computer science, Alan Turing, “What we want is a machine that can learn from experience.” His paper, “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” is the earliest description of neural networks and how computer intelligence should be measured. While the concept of AI isn’t new, we’re only on the cusp of seeing AI drive real business value in the enterprise.

  7. Anyone selling into the government market knows it takes time, patience and investment. The rewards can be great, both intangibly through satisfaction in serving the public good, and financially by winning contracts that can be stable and long term. But competing in this space is no small feat.

It’s no longer enough to count on past performance, a low price and (for smaller businesses) a set-aside designation to give you the winning advantage. Correctly positioning and actively promoting your brand and your win themes has become equally important to standing out in a crowded market.

  8. I once wrote that to be joyful we must capture the natural occurring humor of reality. Extrapolating the idea of seizing natural occurring opportunities, I’m a fan of gleaning customer experience lessons from news headlines.

Here are three quick examples of customer experience lessons just waiting to be plucked from recent news stories:

+Only one Blockbuster Video store remains
+Papa John’s Pizza removes likeness of the company’s founder in the aftermath of his use of a racially offensive word
+Voice search is on the rise

  9. A recent Gartner study into how businesses are implementing emergent tech revealed some insights into the growing use of artificial intelligence in customer service and support applications.

According to Gartner's Technology Roadmap Survey, approximately 37 percent of the 452 business leaders polled said they were "either piloting or using artificial intelligence bots and virtual customer assistance (VCAs)." Of those respondents, 67 percent said they felt such technologies were "high-value tools."

  10. Customer churn in the age of information is a fact of life for every business in every industry. Customers have unprecedented access to data, enabling easy comparisons of alternatives, as well as hassle-free provider changes with a simple click of a button. With Accenture reporting that 77% of consumers are no longer loyal to any particular brand, companies must work harder than ever to retain their customer base. It is well known that the acquisition costs of converting new customers far outweigh the cost of maintaining current customers, further motivating companies to find and implement innovative customer retention strategies. Technology-based customer retention solutions provide powerful platforms and fresh approaches, and most importantly, practical frameworks and processes to successfully engage with customers at scale. They have been proven to consistently decrease churn and improve a business’ bottom line.
