  1. The ecommerce industry has experienced a tremendous amount of growth in the past decade. Having jumped from 3.5% of all retail sales in 2008 to nearly 11.9% in 2018, this growth – in combination with a (still) relatively low market share – represents a huge opportunity for more innovative ecommerce companies looking to overtake their traditional counterparts.

However, in order to latch on to the ‘growth train’, these same ecommerce companies (and therefore, ecommerce managers) are going to have to put their best foot forward. In other words, they’ll need to be sure that they are providing a first-rate online customer experience. And the best way to do this is to start listening to the voice of the customer. After all, your customers can be your best resource in terms of understanding what you’re doing wrong (or right!) on your website or mobile app. So allow me to introduce you to online feedback…

  2. In the future, competition for customers won't be won on product or price, but rather on customer experience. Technology will be a key enabler in sharpening your sword for this upcoming battle," says Jannie du Toit, CEO of Comalytics.

In our age of constant connectivity, the buying journey is no longer linear. Instead, digitally savvy customers want to switch across channels, processes and devices. This is certainly true in the retail world, where companies with a sound omni-channel strategy dominate.

  3. Magento is a well-known ecommerce platform, recently acquired by Adobe. It offers two distinct platforms: Magento Open Source and Magento Commerce (or Magento 2). Supported by global network of nearly 1,150 solution and technology partners, Magento has a library of almost 5,000 extensions, created by other developers that ‘extend’ the functionality of the platform. These extensions range anywhere from Accounting & Finance to Customer Support and Reporting & Analytics to Shipping & Fulfillment and much more. There are also several notable user feedback extensions that are ideal for getting your customer feedback programme up and running.

  4. When it comes to e-commerce personalization, how do you know if you are truly delivering a personalized experience? As shoppers, we all have different likes, patterns, affinities, interests and trigger points that lead us to making purchases. In a physical store environment, an associate is well equipped to not only gauge the interest and patterns of their repeat customer, but also to inquire and learn what prompts that particular shopper to make a purchase. Is it a BOGO offer? Is it the ability to sample a new product with a purchase? Or is it the allure of purchasing an exclusive line solely available at that particular store?

  5. It’s quite evident that the online buying process is no longer a linear one. Consumers are entering eCommerce websites from a myriad of different devices and online channels. And in the midst of all this chaos, your business needs to find a way to reel these consumers in as well as nurture them once they’ve entered your website.

  7. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there in the eCommerce industry. Online retailers face tough competition when it comes to offering a good customer experience and winning over the loyalty of their customers. And the truth remains that while striving for the much-sought-after “perfect customer experience”, there are many struggles these retailers still go through on a daily basis that hold them back.

  8. The need to constantly optimize their site is one of the biggest challenges faced by anyone investing in mobile commerce.

But how can they not? Also referred to as mcommerce or m-commerce, mobile commerce is an advancement of ecommerce that enables people to buy and sell products from virtually anywhere by use of a mobile device. Basically, any monetary transaction that’s completed on a mobile device constitutes as mcommerce.

  9. As the saying goes, “For every customer who bothers to complain, 20 other customers remain silent.” Unless the experience is really bad, customers usually don’t bother to share feedback about an experience that didn’t meet their expectations. Instead, they decide never to do business with the service provider again. That’s a high price to pay for lost feedback.

The lost customer is not the only casualty. Studies have shown that each dissatisfied customer typically shares the unsatisfactory experience with 8 to 10 (sometimes even 20) others. With the growing use of social media, it’s not uncommon for negative feedback to go viral and hurt the credibility of a brand.

  10. Sixty-eight percent of internet users in the European Union shopped online in 2017, says the 2017 survey on Information and Communication Technology. In the US, according to Walker Sands Communications’ The Future of Retail Report 2018, 46 percent of consumers prefer to shop online.

eCommerce is the driving factor behind this shopping evolution. Consumers no longer have to go out to go shopping. eCommerce has brought the shopping experience to their fingertips via computers and mobile devices, completely changing the way consumers shop.

This article is an exploration of the most impactful ways that eCommerce has changed consumer shopping habits.
